A Toledo pastor wants to put a religious twist on his business as he opens a brewery in downtown Toledo.
Rev. Tom Schaeffer of Threshold Church is rennovating an old warehouse site and transforming it into the Black Cloister Brewery on 619 Monroe St.
Schaeffer hopes to keep a monastic atmosphere in the old building.
He says Christianity and beer have a longstanding tradition together, and many of the worldâ??s greatest beers are brewed in monasteries.
Twenty percent of all distribution profits will go to Threshold Church, where Schaeffer is a pastor.
â??Itâ??s incredibly exciting, but we canâ??t get open fast enough,â?? he said. â??I would just love for us to be open tomorrow.â??
The building is just a block from Fifth-Third Field. Some fans are already eyeing the brewery for a postgame beer.
â??We have the local bars,â?? Toledo resident Sue Stelmaszak said. â??But they tend to get a little crowded. So itâ??d be one more place we could hang out.â??
Black Cloister recently bought a 17-barrel brewing system from a company in Little Rock.
Brewery equipment could be coming in as soon as next month.
The brewery will begin distribution early this summer. The taproom will open shortly after that.
