A Northwest Ohio group is preparing to launch a campaign to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

About fifteen supporters of the group, Northwest Ohio NORML, met to discuss the campaign on Monday at the Main Branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.

The group is trying to collect nearly 12,000 signatures on a petition that lobbies for no fines or jail time for marijuana-related offenses. Advocates of the petition say city money spent to fight and prosecute marijuana use can be better spent elsewhere.

??If we take marijuana out of the equation that leaves literally millions of dollars left to make changes in the city that the city needs,?? said Mary Smith, President of Northwest Ohio NORML. She continued, ??It puts protection where protection should be, and that??s in violent crimes, home invasions. That??s where our police force needs to be.??

Northwest Ohio NORML plans to start petitioning throughout Toledo this weekend.
