Officials investigating fatal wrong-way crash in Fremont

A wrong-way crash kills both drivers and seriously injures another on U.S. 6 bypass.

Ohio State Highway Patrol received calls of a wrong-way driver on the roads Monday night in Fremont. Moments later, the situation had taken a turn for the worst.

Troopers discovered a car crash that killed two drivers and injured a teen on U.S. 6 bypass near SR 19 shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Officials said Charles E. Starks, 61, of Fremont, was driving in the opposite direction in the westbound lanes of U.S. 6 bypass when his car crashed into an oncoming black pick-up truck.

15-year-old Zackary Zimmerman was riding along with 57-year-old Evelyn Hunt, of Fremont, the driver of the black, 2007 Dodge Dakota.

Both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene. The teen was sent to the hospital, but a family member and the nurse supervisor told WNWO he was discharged Monday evening.

The westbound lanes had been blocked off as officials cleared the scene for several hours.

The crash remains under investigation to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash, according to officials.
