Olympic volleyball players may boot bikinis

Female beach volleyball players donned bikinis in Beijing.

Female beach volleyball players' somewhat risqué uniforms are getting a makeover for the 2012 Olympics.

New rules allow women to wear shorts and sleeved tops instead of bikinis during play. According to the Associated Press, the move was made out of "respect for the cultural beliefs" of players from other countries who are still qualifying for the games.

"Many of these countries have religious and cultural requirements, so the uniform needed to be more flexible," International Volleyball Federation spokesman Richard Baker told the AP on Tuesday.

Women who want to wear the traditional uniform will not be prevented from doing so.

You can watch the 2012 Summer Olympics on WNWO beginning July 27.
