Online block watches an effective crime fighting tool

A private message sent to the Toledo Police Department's Facebook page led to the capture of a wanted fugitive last week. "A guy by the name of Michael hague was over by the Westfield Mall car wash and we responded immediately," says Sgt. Joe Heffernen, Public Information Officer for the Toledo Police Dept. "After a foot pursuit officers were able to catch him and as it turns out Mr. Hague was about ready to committ another crime," Sgt. Heffernen said.

Tina Scott is administrator for the Willys Parkway Toledo Neighborhood block watch Facebook page. She posted information about a break-in at a home on Revere Drive on Sunday. "The next thing you got one house broken into and you have to wonder are there others," Ms. Scott said.

Other Toledo neighborhoods have established block watch programs on Facebook. Among them are Old Orchard, Castleton/Elmhurst Park and Hampton Park.
