Ottawa National Refuge gains funding to improve roadways

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge gains federal money to improve roads.

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur announced Tuesday a $133,600 federal award to improve roadways for the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.

Congresswoman Kaptur said the improvements are needed to support the refugeâ??s popular auto tour.

â??These improvements will promote increased visitation to the incomparable Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge,â?? said Kaptur. "The auto tours give the public the opportunity to parts of the refuge that are normally closed."

The monthly tours involve a seven-mile drive through the refuge. It gives the public access to see a wider variety of wildlife, including birds. The Ottawa refuge is known to have one of the top 10 bird watching sites nationwide.

The funding will go towards improving county roads as more than 130,000 people visit each year. Money will also be needed to maintain flooding roadways and burrowing animals.
