Toledo Fire and Rescue held its first pancake fund-raiser on Sunday, to support its new foundation that provides emergency financial assistance to those in the line of duty.
More than 500 supporters came out to the inaugural event to support the Toledo Fire and Rescue Foundation, which was formed to assist firefighters who experience a catastrophic illness or injury.
??In the fire service, we??re proud to do the service that we do taking care of the public,?? said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld, Public Information Officer for Toledo Fire and Rescue. He continued, ??A foundation like this is to take care of our own.??
Sunday??s inaugural event was named ??For Pete??s Sake,?? in memory of Battalion Chief Peter J. Jaegly, who recently lost his 2-year battle with cancer.
Thousands of dollars have already been donated for the foundation. The department hopes the contributions will sustain the program into the future, and protect firefighters who risk their lives for the Toledo community.
