Passenger dies in suspected I-75 road rage crash

Monroe County sheriff's deputies have released the names of the people involved in a fatal crash that may have resulted from a road rage incident on Tuesday night.

The crash happened on I-75 south near Nadeau Road when a pickup truck rear-ended another pickup, according to the Monroe Evening News. The sheriff's office reports the vehicles collided "for unknown reasons."

The newspaper reports the driver told investigators he was trying to get away from the other pickup as he drove from I-275 onto southbound I-75 around 10:30 p.m.

When the vehicle was hit, 48-year-old John Mercurio Jr. lost control and hit the median guardrail, ejecting the rear-seat passenger, 69-year-old John Mercurio Sr., into the roadway.

Police report the other pickup, driven by 56-year-old John Zabawa, also hit the median guardrail and lost control.

Mercurio Sr. was hit by the pickup after being ejected during the crash. Zabawa and another motorist reportedly stopped and helped free the man from underneath the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mercurio Jr.'s front seat passenger, 66-year-old Laurie Mercurio, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Mercy Memorial Hospital.

Zabawa was questioned by authorities but not arrested. Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.The investigation is ongoing.
