Pfizer recalls millions of birth control pills

Pfizer has issued a recall of birth control pills, like the ones seen here in this file photo.

fizer Inc. announced Wednesday a recall of 1 million packets of birth control.

A packaging error could leave women with an inadequate dose of hormone-based drugs and increase the risk of accidental pregnancy, the company said.

The affected brands are Lo/Ovral-28 and generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets, marketed by Akrimax Products.

Oral birth control products use a series of 7 inactive sugar tablets and 21 drug tablets in order to regulate a woman's menstrual period. Pfizer said some birth control packets had too many active tablets and others did not have enough.
