Pfizer recalls millions of birth control pills

Pfizer has issued a recall of birth control pills, like the ones seen here in this file photo.

P fizer Inc. announced Wednesday a recall of 1 million packets of birth control.

A packaging error could leave women with an inadequate dose of hormone-based drugs and increase the risk of accidental pregnancy, the company said.

The affected brands are Lo/Ovral-28 and generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets, marketed by Akrimax Products.

Oral birth control products use a series of 7 inactive sugar tablets and 21 drug tablets in order to regulate a woman's menstrual period. Pfizer said some birth control packets had too many active tablets and others did not have enough.

No safety risk is associated with the recall, the company said, only a risk of pregnancy.
