A 49-year-old Michigan man died Sunday night after he was hit by a vehicle on South Dixie Highway when the truck he was riding in ran out of gas.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, 49-year-old Orlando Porter was the front seat passenger in a pickup driven by 33-year-old Kelly Lynch in Monroe Township. The vehicle ran out of gas traveling southbound on Dixie Highway, but Lynch was able to pull off the roadway on to the west shoulder.
Once parked, Porter exited the vehicle to retrieve a gas can from the bed of the truck. He then walked to the driver side door to speak to Lynch when they were both struck by another pickup truck that was traveling southbound.
Porter was transported to a Monroe hospital, where he later died from injuries suffered in the crash. The driver of the other truck, 59-year-old Matthew Brooks of Erie, Mich., was also transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released for injuries suffered in the crash.
Lynch and a 5-year-old rear seat passenger were not injured.
Authorities report alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call (734)-240-7551.
