The Food and Drug Administration has approved the availability of the morning after pill to girls 15 and older without a prescription.
An earlier application by the drug manufacturer to make Plan-B One Step available over the counter to all women was rejected in 2011. The product will be available in retail outlets with an on-site pharmacy and clearly labeled with the new age restriction. Customers will be required to verify their age before purchasing Plan-B One Step.
The drug maker will also include a security tag to the packaging to prevent theft. Plan-B One Step is an emergency contraceptive taken after unprotected sex to reduce the possibility of pregnancy.
It does not end or affect an existing pregnancy.
