Police name suspect and victim in Southland shooting

Toledo Police have released the names of the victim and suspect involved in the Southland Shopping Center shooting late Sunday morning.

Police have identified the shooting suspect as 29-year-old Jashua J. Perz. He's accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Kaitlin Gerber late Sunday morning at the Southland Shopping Center in South Toledo.

Toledo police say they received a 911 call from Gerber at 11:34 a.m. stating her ex-boyfriend was chasing her in his car and shooting at her as she was trying to escape.

Shortly after that call, other 911 calls came in saying that a man later identified as Jashua Perz had just shot a woman in the parking lot of the Planet Fitness workout facility and fled in a blue SUV.

When Toledo police arrived, Gerber was found dead inside her car. About 20 minutes later, Maumee police went to Perz's home at 1145 Kirk Street in Maumee where the man barricaded himself inside the house.

Police say negotiations with Perz to give himself up broke down. Around 5 p.m., SWAT team members made up of different agencies entered the home and found Perz dead of an apparent self inflicted gun shot wound.
