An NBC24 Fact Finder --- We were the first to report about a federal investigation into the death of an inmate at the Lucas County Jail . Now, we have some of the police reports about the death.

Carlton Benton, a 24-year old murder suspect, died June 1, 2004, after scuffling with deputies. According to sheriff's department records, he was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after having a seizure just before midnight.

On the way back to the jail, deputy Jeff Pauwels wrotes, "Benton was acting out in a very aggressive manner. Benton would not cooperate while being ankle cuffed or belly chained. Benton was pepper sprayed."

Deputy Jay Schmeltz added, "while struggling with inmate Carlton for at least 10 - 15 minutes, we both used pepper spray."

A few hours later, at about 2 a.m., deputy Mark Holloway reported that Benton began having seizures again.

Benton was taken back to St. Vincent's where he died.

The death certificate lists the cause of death as "seizure disorder in association with bupropion use." Bupropion is an antidepressent that has been linked to seizures.

NBC24 asked for a full copy of the autopsy report, but coroner's office turned down the request, citing the ongoing investigation.
