Ref back in court for stolen gun incident

The high school referee charged with bringing a firearm into a school safety zone will be back in court for his trial on Tuesday.

Darrel Phillips, 45, pleaded not guilty to the charges in March after his 9 mm handgun was stolen from a locker at Southview High School while he was officiating a basketball game earlier this year.

Phillips had a permit and told authorities he forgot the gun was in the bag. However, it is illegal to carry a weapon on school grounds.

If convicted, he faces up to one year in prison.

No one has been arrested for the gun theft.
