Ref to be arraigned after stolen gun incident

The high school basketball referee whose gun was stolen during a game will be arraigned on Friday morning.

Darrel Phillips, 45, is facing one count of possessing a firearm in a school safety zone. He told police someone took his handgun from a locker while he officiated a game at Southview High School in January.

Phillips has a permit and told authorities he forgot the 9 mm handgun was in the bag. However, it is illegal to carry a weapon on school grounds.

There is still no word on the suspect who snuck into the school and stole the gun.
