      Residents displaced after Monroe apartment fire

      Residents at a Monroe apartment complex are displaced after a fire erupted in part of the building Saturday morning.

      Fire crews from the Monroe area responded to the blaze at Hidden Trail Apartments around 9 a.m. and rushed to rescue several residents who were trapped on the third floor of the building. The fire quickly spread throughout a 49-unit section of the building as residents escaped through the smoky hallways.The flames were under control by early Saturday afternoon, leaving the building with a partial structural collapse and extensive smoke and water damage. No fire-related injuries were reported, but some residents lost everything from their pets to possessions in the ashes.Frenchtown Fire Chief Mark Nicholai said the fire is believed to have started on the third floor, although the cause is still under investigation.The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter to provide assistance for any displaced residents at Crosspoint Church in Monroe. The shelter will remain open until a more permanent facility is needed.
