Sheriff Benny Napoleon is urging Detroit and Wayne County residents to forego the annual practice of bringing in the new year with gunfire.

The "Ring in the New Year with a Bell, Not a Bang" safety campaign is intended to remind people about the consequences of using guns during New Year's Eve celebrations.

For decades, many people have pointed guns skyward and fired off numerous shots leading up to and well after the stroke of midnight.

The annual safety campaign asks people to ring a bell, instead. The Rev. Nicholas Hood III founded "Ring in the New Year with a Bell, Not a Bang" after a Detroit grandmother was killed by a stray bullet while sitting in her dining room.

Napoleon and Hood will announce this season's campaign on Thursday.
