The Washington Local School District has issued a statement on the passing of a Whitmer graduate, Stephen Machcinski, who died in the line of duty on Sunday.
"The Washington Local School District and community have heavy hearts with the death of firefighter and Whitmer graduate Stephen Machcinski. Stephen personified what we attempt to instill in young people. He put service to others in front of self and did so with courage and integrity. His legacy in our school district is secure, and his example to young people and all in our community will never be forgotten," the statement said.
Private Machcinski and Private James Dickman both gave the ultimate sacrifice while fighting an apartment fire on Magnolia Street.
The pair, both Toledo firefighters, was responding to the blaze with Engine 3 when they needed to be rescued from the structure.
Both were pronounced dead at St. Vincent Medical Center. Officials issued autopsy reports Monday at the Lucas County Coroner's Office.
Before coming to Toledo, Pvt. Dickman served in the Sandusky Perkins Fire Department.
WNWO has reached out to that fire department for comment but has not heard back yet.
