Search for missing kayakers called off

Jon Francis and his 12-year-old daughter Viola were reported missing early Sunday after kayaking in the Sandusky Bay.

After an all-day effort yesterday, the search for a missing father and daughter last seen in Sandusky Bay has been called off indefinitely.

Jon Francis and his 12-year-old daughter Viola took their kayaks on the bay late Saturday afternoon, and were reported missing around 5 a.m. the next morning. The pair was last seen near Crystal Rock in Sandusky Bay.

Empty kayaks and a pair of boots were discovered around the area they were last spotted, but as of Monday morning, that is the only trace left behind. Authorities say despite the lack of success, they are trying to remain positive

â??We don't want to think about the worst right now. Obviously our thoughts and prayers are going out to the family," Chief Dep. Jared Oliver said. "We're hoping this has a positive resolution. We don't know yet. Obviously, we found the kayaks early this morning. They're unoccupied."

Authorities are asking anyone who has seen or knows anything to call the Erie County Sheriff's Office at (419)-627-7668.
