      Sheriff places Hancock County under level 3 weather emergency

      Hancock County is under a level 3 weather emergency for all Hancock County roads along the Blanchard River and Eagle Creek as of 10:00 AM Monday. Level 3 means that only emergency personnel and those who provide essential services are allowed on the roadways.

      According to Hancock County Sheriff, Michael Heldman, most roadways in the county in those areas are closed and hazardous due to flooding.

      The National Weather Service that most roads along Eagle Creek which runs through the southern part of the county will be inundated and they anticipate wide spread evacuations will be necessary. Included as probable flood targets are the Spring Lake Housing Development and the pumping station along the Brookside Drive levy.

      Hancock County as well as Seneca, Putnam, Allen, and Auglaize counties are experiencing flooding from small streams and rivers. The National Weather Service has also issued a flood warning for the Auglaize River in Paulding County and Putnam County.

      Police remind motorists that they should never drive into flooded areas -- even in raised four wheel drive vehicles. Motorists run the risk of being trapped in high waters, being swept away by fast moving flash floods, and damage to their vehicles.
