Shutdown will not impact Marines/Toys for Tots program

The partial government shutdown has led to the cancellation of some events involving active duty military personnel. This Saturday's events sponsored by Toledo-based Heroes in Action have all been cancelled. A note on the charity's website says "due to the government situation, all military personnel are unable to participate in any community events until issues are resolved."

The partial government shutdown will not affect the annual Toys for Tots program in which US Marines partner with the Salvation Army of Northwest Ohio. "We met with them today and we are going ahead as planned; the Marines are a great partner with the Salvation Army and provide many of the toys that we need for Christmas," says Beth Schwandt, Operations Manager for the Salvation Army of Northwest Ohio.

Last year 3,000 children in the greater Toledo area received toys from the Salvation Army.
