Six-foot giraffe born at the Toledo Zoo

Newborn Enzi and mother, Elvira

Officials at the Toledo Zoo have announced the birth of a new male giraffe who may join the Zoo's Africa! exhibit as early as this spring.

Enzi was born Dec. 26, 2009 to mother Elvira and father Mowgli. The male Masai calf stood nearly six feet tall and weighed about 150 pounds at birth.

Masai giraffes are the tallest animals on the planet at an average height of 16 to 18 feet when fully grown. They can run at speeds of up to 35 mph and are generally identified by their irregularly-shaped spots, which are as unique as human fingerprints.

Enzi means "powerful and mighty" in Swahili.
