The Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station is getting some upgrades as its operator looks towards the future.
Crews lifted the second of two brand new steam generators into the plant over the weekend. The buildingâ??s three-foot concrete wall had to be broken to get the 74-foot tall generators in. FirstEnergy says the $600 million project will help get the power plant back in operation.
â??The two we have already installed at Davis-Besse are original plant components dating back to 1977,â?? said FirstEnergy spokeswoman Jennifer Young. â??The two new components that weâ??ll be putting in will help the plant operate safely and reliably through an extended life period.â??
The power plantâ??s license is set to expire in 2017 and FirstEnergy is in the process of getting a new 20-year lease. That subject will be discussed during a public meeting at Camp Perry on March 25.
