Toledo police have arrested a 15-year old male in connection with a rape and robbery of a learning disabled woman Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities say Anferney Fontenet, 15, raped a woman on the side of a West Toledo street as traffic drove by. The incident occurred on Royalton near Lyman around 2:30 p.m.
Police say the victim, a 26-year-old woman, was walking to the West Toledo library on Sylvania Ave. when she was attacked. Authorities say Fontenet came up behind the woman and put scissors to her throat. He then took off her pants and proceeded to rape her, according to police.
Royalton Road sees a steady amount of traffic in the afternoon hours. It runs parralel to Sylvania Ave. off of Jackman Rd. in West Toledo. Police say Fontenet was not hindered by traffic that drove by as the crime was taking place. At one point, Fontenet is said to have stared down a driver before continuing with his act.
Toledo Police Sgt. Sam Harris says it is likely the drivers did not realize what was occurring when they drove by. However, some drivers did call 9-1-1 to report witnessing an assault.
The suspect fled the scene with the woman's pants after the sexual assault.
Fontenet was arrested at his home around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday. Police say he confessed to the crime upon his arrest. He was arraigned in Lucas County Juvenile Court late Wednesday morning where he was formally charged with delinquency in connection with the rape and robbery.
A trial date has been set for Feb. 2, 2010. Prosecutors will decide later this week whether Fontenet will be tried as a adult.
Fontenet is a sophomore at Start High School.
