Three - including pregnant woman - killed in Airport Hwy. crash

A car crash claimed the lives of three people Wednesday afternoon -- including a woman who was eight months pregnant.

The accident happened at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Airport Highway near Wenz Rd., by Swan Creek Metropark.

The crash involved two cars and a minivan and took place on slick roads after a day's worth of rainfall. Airport Highway was closed from Eastgate St. to Wenz Road while crews worked to extricate the injured.

According to police at the scene, Dawon Fisher, 27, nearing a full-term pregnancy, was driving a Honda Accord east on Airport Hwy. when her vehicle went left of center, striking a westbound minivan head-on. Another vehicle travelling behind the minivan crashed into the two disabled vehicles.

Norbert Thiel, 80, and his wife, Nancy Thiel, 76, who were inside the minivan were killed. Authorities say Mr. Thiel is a retired Toledo Police lieutenant.

Fisher was rushed to the University of Toledo Medical Center where her baby girl was delivered by C-section. The newborn was taken to Toledo Children's Hospital in critical condition. The mother was later pronounced dead at UTMC.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Unconfirmed reports indicate the pregnant woman may have been on her cell phone at the time of the crash.
