Toledo backseat robbery suspect turns to rape

Toledo Police are warning women to lock their car doors after a string of robberies, and even a sexual assault, committed by what authorities believe is one individual.

Police released surveillance footage and photos of the suspect they say robbed a number of women at gunpoint in separate incidents dating back to March 2. The suspects apparent game is to case parking lots looking for a woman's vehicle with unlocked doors. He then enters the vehicle and waits in the backseat until the female driver, who he also knows to be alone, gets in the car.

Once the woman is inside the car, the suspect demands money and if not enough is handed over, he forces the victim to drive to a nearby ATM to withdraw more cash.

The suspect's alleged crime spree began March 2 when police say he robbed a Subway store on Broadway. The man entered the store and pointed a gun at workers before leaping over the counter and accessing the register himself.

In an incident on March 3, the suspect waited in the backseat of a female victim's minivan parked behind a business at 732 South Ave. When the victim handed over $5 the victim forcibly drove to an ATM and withdrew $200 for the suspect before driving to the corner of Dorr and Wells. He then exited the vehicle after telling her, at gunpoint, to not look back and not call police.

On March 8, police believe the same man approached a woman in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Collingwood Blvd. He told the victim to give him all her money. When she could only produce $15 and told him she didn't have an ATM card, she stated she could take him to her apartment for more cash. She led him to her apartment door and fought him off. The suspect hit the woman before she was able to close the door and lock herself inside with the suspect outside. The man fled before police arrived on scene.

One day later, the suspect was waiting in the backseat of a woman's vehicle outside a convenience store on W. Central Ave. The man held a gun at her and demanded money. She told him she didn't have any money and was then unable to withdraw any money at a nearby ATM. The suspect then threatened the victim and told her he would sexually assault her if she could not get him any money. The victim was told to drive to an alley, instead she drove to her ex-boyfriend's location and began screaming for help. The man then fled the scene and headed towards Parkwood Ave.

Police say that the suspect raped his latest victim. The woman got in her car after leaving work at a fast food restaurant on Collingwood Blvd. around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.

In all five incidents, the suspect is described as a black male, about 6'1" - 6'3", wearing dark pants and a large black-hooded sweatshirt or Carhart-type jacket. In most incidents witnesses say he was also wearing a red bandana. He was armed with a handgun in all incidents.

If you have any information regarding any of these incidents, or are able to identify the suspect, you are asked to call Toledo Police Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
