On his first full day in office newly sworn in Toledo mayor D. Michael Collins affirmed his campaign pledge to re-open the Northwest District police substation. "The residents want that police presence and it is my responsibility as mayor to fulfill that," Mayor Collins said. West Toledo resident Tina Scott led a petition drive that called on Collins' predecessor, Mike Bell to keep the building open. "It's all about police presence because when you don't have a police presence in the neighborhood crime goes up," Ms. Scott said.
Collins wants the facility operational by April 1. "Hopefully by the end of next week we will have an evaluation to see what needs to be done to get it back in operation," Mr. Collins said.
Last year city council approved $100,000 to re-open the substation. Collins suspects it will cost more than that to make all of the necessary repairs.
