A Toledo charity that the government suspected of having ties to the militant Islamic group Hamas has gone out of business.
The Treasury Department used terror-financing laws to freeze the assets of KindHearts for Charitable Humanitarian Development in 2006. The Toledo Blade report
the nonprofit organization based in Toledo issued a public notice last week saying it had been dissolved.
KindHearts leaders had denied any connection to terrorism. They said the group provided up to $6 million a year in humanitarian aid to the world's poor.
The American Civil Liberties Union joined KindHearts in suing the Treasury in 2008 over the asset freeze. Lawyers recently notified a federal judge that they were trying to complete a settlement agreement in the case.
