Toledo City Council more diverse in 2014

Former City Councilman D. Michael Collins took the oath of office as Mayor of Toledo on Thursday.

A spirit of cooperation and bi-partisanship cascaded over One Government Center as former City Councilman D. Michael Collins took the oath of office as Mayor of Toledo.Newly elected at-large Councilwoman Sandy Spang expressed the hope that the new mayor and the new city council will be able to work together. "We have a new mayor, who is coming from the ranks of city council,so I think there will be a different sensitivity to the role of council," Spang said.

Larry Sykes, who beat out incumbent Adam Martinez by five votes for the sixth and final at-large seat, says he is optimistic that his colleagues on council will be able to work with Collins. "Mr. Collins told me he would not bring anything or promote anything or move anything forward that city council would not approve," Mr. Sykes said.

Matt Cherry, a business agent for Sheet Metal Workers Local 33, will replace D. Michael Collins on Toledo City Council.

After a swearing-in ceremony for both new Mayor Collins and some members of council, councilmen voted 8-3 in favor of Mr. Cherry over Marcia Helman, a business owner.

The Lucas County Democratic Party this week selected Mr. Cherry, 33, as its pick for the Collins seat.

Also at today's meeting, Paula Hicks-Hudson was re-elected council president.
