Toledo council member pleads not guilty to assault charge
TOLEDO, Ohio (WNWO) —
Toledo city councilman Larry Sykes pleaded not guilty on Monday to assault.
The charge stems from an incident at a downtown bar last week, where Sykes allegedly choked and slapped activist Julian Mack.
In a statement released today by Sykes’ attorney, both Sykes and Mack say they are trying to put the incident behind them.
The pair say “many facts surrounding this matter have been misunderstood,” and they are looking to settle the matter outside of the courts.
The entire statement reads:
“Councilman Sykes and Mr. Mack sincerely express their regrets over the events that took place the evening of Thursday, October 19.
They also agree that many facts surrounding this matter have been misunderstood.
Neither is interested in proceeding in the courts and both intend to reconcile in a way that will yield tangible results and help stop violence in our community. Most importantly, any issues they've had are much smaller than our community's needs.
There will be no further comments from either on this subject at this time.”
