Toledo has a homeless population of around 900

John Whitlow is an outreach technician with Neighborhood Properties, Inc. That organization helps homeless people get their own apartments. For the last nine years John has driven around Toledo at night trying to find people who might be sleeping on the streets. "When I do find somebody out there, I try to find them immediate shelter, that's the first priority," Mr. Whitlow said. Whitlow used to be homeless. He says that experience helps him relate to the people he encounters on the street. "I found that if I talk the lingo and if I sort of look the part, I get better results," Mr. Whitlow said.

Thomas Bonnington, is the director of the Toledo Lucas County Homelessness Board. He is sending out a team of volunteers out on January 28 to tabulate the number of homeless people in Toledo and Lucas County. "We will have various teams going through the city and county and they will be looking for homeless people to gather information and add to our count and get them into services," Mr. Bonnington said.
