Toledo Hemp center celebrates 4/20 with healing
TOLEDO, OHIO (WNWO)-- April twentieth has become known as a weed smokers holiday, but there's a growing community celebrating the cannabis plant for it's other other healing benefits.
"My ma got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer," said Kevin Spitler, owner of the Toledo Hemp Center LLC. "The doctors gave her 3 months to live so i started bringing products down."
With the help of hemp Spitler says his mom was able to live an additional 9 months. After seeing what it did for her,5 years ago he started the Hemp Center.
"I had to find a way to help other moms and dads and brothers and sisters," said Spitler.
But if you walk in the store looking to get stoned, it's not the spot for you .
Though hemp and marijuana are both cannabis plants. The difference is in the THC-- the compound that gets you high.
"Hemp in most cases is going to have .3 percent or less THC which is a very minute amount," Spitler told NBC 24.
Both plants also contain CBD, though hemp produces more of the chemical, credited for reducing inflammation, anxiety, and pain.
It can be used in everything from sprays and lotions, to dog treats. Along with pain relief, users swear by it's ability to replace pills and other drugs.
Linda Turvey, a 5 year hemp product, user says she was borderline addicted to heavy narcotics, like Vicodin, Oxycontin and morphine.
"I have been able to get off these medications and put them down for good," said Turvey.
Cameron Dempsey who has fibromyalgia and arthritis says she too was able to reduce her pill prescriptions.
"I'm down to two drugs now with the cbd oil," said Dempsey.
In a culture that's becoming more cannabis receptive, the Hemp center says they'll continue to spread awareness.
"You're always looking for that better quality life and for us to be able to provide that to them-- mainly the 55 and older crowd especially--that's pretty huge," said Spitler.
