Toledo rescue groups are currently caring for more puppies during the winter.
Planned Pethood has about 45 puppies being fostered at a south Toledo home. Toledo Area Humane Society is caring for another 28 puppies at its Maumee shelter plus another dozen in foster care.
The Lucas County Pit crew has taken in 21 puppies just born during the weekend at the Lucas County Canine Care & Control.
For those interested in adoption, contact any of the three listed groups.
Nikki Morey of Planned Pethood has her theory for the surge of puppies.
"I think a lot of it is people are having unintended pregnancies and are kind of stuck holding the bag as you say," Morey said.
