The Toledo Walleye are set to play their first-ever outdoor games and the first for the ECHL.
Two outdoor Walleye hockey games at Fifth Third Field will highlight a week of Winterfest celebrations in downtown Toledo from Dec. 26, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015.
The ECHL announced Wednesday that the Walleye will face the Kalamazoo Wings on Dec. 27, 2014, and will take on the Fort Wayne Komets on Jan. 3, 2015.
The games will be on an outdoor hockey rink constructed over the baseball diamond at Fifth Third Field. The length of the ice will run across the infield between first and third base.
"There has been a lot of excitement around the League since we first announced this event last October," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. "With the Walleye hosting regional rivals Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne in the first outdoor games in ECHL history, we are expecting a tremendous response from fans and are looking forward to two great nights during the 2014-15 season."
Winterfest will feature additional games including an ECHL alumni showdown and youth, high school and adult hockey games. Winter enthusiasts will also be able to participate in community skating at a Rockefeller Center-like rink.
