Thu, 05 Sep 2013 16:20:51 GMT — U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur announced Wednesday federal funding for improvements at the Toledo Zoo.The zoo received about $145,000 for two interactive visitor â??touch tanks," one containing invertebrates and another holding sharks and stingrays.â??This award will help the zoo enhance the visitor experience for the thousands of families who visit every year,â?? said Congresswoman Kaptur. â??It will also help with renovation of the historic aquarium building that was constructed back in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration.â??The Institute of Museum and Library Services provided the funds, so the exhibits can provide interactive experiences with animals.The zooâ??s aquatic animal collection includes threatened and endangered species. The project aims to preserve the Kihansi spray toad, a tiny African invertebrate whose loss of habitat threatens its survival.
