More of Toledo's finest canines will soon be better suited to serve and protect thanks to a nationwide Groupon event raising money for new vests.
The Toledo Police Department said on their Facebook page Thursday that over $335,000 has been raised in the Groupon Grassroots "Occassions" event.
Thanks to the funds raised, Toledo Police K-9s Nero, Luke, and Yuma will be new recipients of bullet and stab protective vests.
The Groupon event raised funds for Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a nationwide non-profit that provides law enforcement dogs with protective body armor in memory of the Pittsburgh Police Department's Rocco. The dutiful K-9 sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January.
All new ballistic vests will include embroidery that says, "In Memory of K9 Rocco, Pittsburgh Police Department".
