Toledo Public Schools superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko says despite the defeat of Issue 20 no teachers will be laid off and no schools will be closed. "Over the next 18 months we will have to consider some changes but art, music and physical education are safe," Dr. Pecko said. Dr. Pecko and all 5 members of the school board will travel to Columbus next week to meet with state education leaders to consider how to proceed in the wake of the levy defeat.
Terrell West of Central Toledo has a son who is enrolled in Martin Luther King Academy for Boys. Mr. West says many parents were reluctant to support the levy because of a lack of confidence in TPS administration. "Some of the Toledo Public Schools are taking away sports and other programs and some parents don't want to invest in that," Mr. West said.
