Truck driver's view obstructed before crashing into school bus, injuring children

Onsted elementary students treated at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian.

A dozen students were sent to an Adrian hospital after their school bus collided with a pickup truck on a busy highway Wednesday morning.

Lenawee County Undersheriff Jim Anderson said two Onsted elementary students are in serious condition Wednesday afternoon following the morning crash on U.S. 223 and Onsted Highway in Rome Township.

Anderson said 21-year-old Tyler Smith told authorities his view was obstructed by two parked delivery trucks as he drove his pickup from a gas station into the path of the bus about 7:15 a.m.

Smith was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

Anderson said the bus was carrying 25 Onsted Community Schools students. Most of the students were elementary school-aged. As of Wednesday afternoon, one student remained at ProMedica's Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. That student is being kept overnight for observation. Another seriously injured student has been transferred to another hospital.

According to ProMedica, a total of 15 patients were treated at their Adrian hospital Wednesday morning. Eleven were brought in by ambulance and four came in as walk-ins.

Onsted district parents have been notified about the crash by telephone and email.

The crash remains under investigation.
