University of Toledo begins research on producing fuel from algae

The United States Department of Energy has tasked the University of Toledo (UT) with finding a faster, cleaner process to produce fuel.

UT was awarded nearly $2.4 million in federal grants to develop a way to turn algae into fuel without adding carbon dioxide.

"For our community algae seems to be just this bad idea but there are positives to algae," UT Associate Professor Dr. Sridhar Viamajala says. "There is potential to make fuels and products from algae and it's not just a nuisance and a health hazard."

Montana State University, Arizona State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are also part of the three-year project.
