University of Toledo research included in 2017 Ohio algal bloom report

Ohio Sea Grant has released its annual report on the state's Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative.

The University of Toledo Water Task Force, whose studies are acknowledged in the report, has $12.5 million in active grants it's using to study the blooms, invasive species and pollutants to ensure that future generations have safe drinking water.

The report offers solutions for the community such as dietary guidelines and cooperating with local leaders and businesses.

"We're much better off now largely because we have measures in place at the water treatment plants and on Lake Erie to let us know when there is a bloom approaching the water intake," explained Dr. Tom Bridgeman from the Department of Environmental Sciences. "So we know it's coming much better than we did three years ago and we know how to treat it better now too."

The complete report can be viewed online.
