The Sandusky Register has obtained video from the scene of a multi-vehicle crash along the Ohio Turnpike that killed two and seriously injured an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper.
The images captured by Shawn Foucher show several tractor trailers in a single heap of twisted metal near milepost 102-103.
As of 5:30 p.m. the Turnpike was still closed in both directions because of several crashes along the Turnpike.
Ohio State Highway Patrol estimates that between 40 and 50 vehicles were involved in crashes along the Turnpike this afternoon.
According to officials with the Ohio Turnpike, "all emergency & turnpike crews are on scene. [We're] hoping to begin clearing cars through 1 lane within 30 minutes. Scene spread over 2 miles."
Officials at the scene confirm at least two people were killed in the crash.
An Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper also remains hospitalized, in serious condition, but investigators say his injures appear to be non-life threatening.
Investigators believe the trooper became pinned between two vehicles while on-scene responding to earlier crashes in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike in Sandusky County.
The first crash was reported at approximately 1:25 p.m. and Patrol personnel learned the trooper was pinned at 2:05 p.m. The trooper was transported to Firelands Hospital in Sandusky with severe injuries.
Patrol crash reconstructionists are enroute to the scene.
