'War Horse' trots to Stranahan Theater stage

Five-time 2011 Tony Awards winner "War Horse" literally trotted into the Stranahan Theater on Tuesday and patrons got a sneak peak of what else to expect for the 2013-2014 season.

Nick Stafford's Broadway adaptation of the Michael Morpurgo novel features life-sized puppet horses that producers say, "Bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride." The Theater Group surprised Tuesday's audience when the play's main steed "Joey," galloped on-stage for a demonstration of how the puppet works.

Created by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, the horses each take a crew of three puppeteers to control movements, sounds, and mannerisms. On Tuesday, Joey walked through the audience, grunted, stamped his hooves, and almost galloped off-stage away from trainers!

War Horse is filled with inventiveness that has made the play an international success, and comes to the Toledo stage December 3-8th. It stands alongside a 2013-2014 Stranahan Theater lineup that also includes Hello Dolly!, Rock of Ages, Million Dollar Quartet, Stomp, West Side Story and Green Day's rock-opera American Idiot.
