It has the makings of a big game party foul: Kraft Foods is running low on Velveeta.
The cheesy party staple is, to some, a football requirement - especially during the playoffs. Come February 2, your big game party may be without a melted blend of cheese and salsa and it's all due to a possible Velveeta shortage.
AdAge broke the news after receiving reports of a shortage at some East Coast grocery stores. In Brooklyn, a grocer says they're not expecting shipments until February because of a plant issue.
Yet, many believe the "shortage" has all the hallmark signs of a great public relations stunt. "The chances of them running out of cheese before the biggest dipping day of the year seems a little far-fetched," said marketing expert Peter Shankman.
Super Bowl XLVIII will be played in New York on Feb. 2.

"Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Kraft's spokesperson Jody Moore told Ad Age. "Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue. It's a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand."
Velveeta keeps well before unwrapping, so you might as well stock up now - you know, just in case. Happy dipping!
