Off to the police department to see what the bad guys were up to last night.  Then off to check on an unusual death.  We'll have more details later.

Had to shift to another story.  Today, we covered the impact the state senate's decision to cap interest rates on payday loan companies will have on their customers.  State lawmakers say, the loan companies charge loanshark-like interest rates--often almost 400-percent annually.  But the lenders say, that number is decieving because they don't grant year long loans.  They say, they charge a $15 fee for every $100 they loan for two weeks.  And for folks living paycheck to paycheck, they say, that's a lot less than the fine for bouncing a check.  The lenders say, with the cap, many will have to shut down.  Right now, there are more than 1600 payday lenders in the state, employing more than 6-thousand people.  The bill now goes before the governor, and he's expected to pass it into law.

3:41pm

Tonight I'll be at a 6pm presser for a group calling themselves the Crystal Dixon Legal Defense Fund.  Dixon is the former VP for Human Resources at UT.  She was fired after she wrote a column in the Toledo Free Press making controversial statements about homosexuality.  I'll have details, live at 7:30pm.

10:10pm

It was interesting to hear Dixon's perspective on this and to speak with people at UT.  Hear from both in my story tonight at 11pm.

(Wednesday, May 7, 2008)

11:15am

I had some time yesterday to call around about Labor Report ideas and was fortunate enough to set one up early.  Now I'm headed out the door to UT's Nitschke Auditorium to do a preview on tomorrow's Labor Management Cooperation Convention - Local 14 and GM Powertrain are getting a big award for their successful partnership.

1:30pm

The interviews were short and sweet and will come together for a nice labor report.  I interviewed the Executive Director for the Northwest Ohio Center for Labor - Management Cooperation.  I also interviewed the former Region 2B Director Jack Sizemore who now works for the Labor Management Cooperation - they both were full of good information about the importance of good labor-management relationships...and about tomorrow's conference.

While we were out we also stopped by a school where Norm Van Ness was doing a weather presentation - you can watch that tonight as well!

Now I'm going to log and write my story.

4:00pm

Everything is finished.  I just need to write my web story and send some emails...I'm fronting my labor report live at 7pm and then I'm off until Saturday.

Monday, April 28

I'm in the weather center this morning. Tune in and have a cup of coffee with me. Scattered showers today with a high of 48.

We took my daughter Hannah to a dance competition this weekend with my good friend Denise Mallory and her daughter Clare. My mom, Nancy Strouse was proud to watch the girls strut their stuff since she is a dancer too! We had a fun time and the girls at Encore Dance Studio in Adrian brought home gold trophies and lots of blue ribbons. Dance

Thursday, May 15

9:30am
I'm checking police and court reports.  I got a phone call this morning from a spiritual leader in Toledo concerned that a demolished home has been sitting across from her church for three months.  We've reported on the problem.  I'm going to continue checking with the city.

12:55pm
I'm heading to court to cover the latest developments in the death of a toddler.

6:25pm
I was at the Henry County Courthouse as a man charged in the drug related death of a 13 month old toddler pleaded not guilty.  David Knepley, 48 would not answer any of my questions about the case, but instead referred me to his lawyer.  Both Knepley and the victim's mother Jayme Schwenkmeyer, 22 have entered not guilty pleas in court.  An autopsy found a toxic amount of the prescription painkiller Oxycodone in the toddler's system.
