Updated: Special pup headed to shelter

After searching and waiting for help, a Toledo woman plans to take her handicapped dog to the Toledo Humane Society because she can not afford to give her the special care she needs. But it is not too late. If you or someone you know could help this wonderful dog by providing a home or some medical care, contact Heidi Crates using the information at the bottom of the page immediately. The original story is below.

A dog is man's best friend and one little Toledo pup is looking for a pal.

This true "underdog" that needs a place to call home.

When two-year old Jack Russel/Boston Terrier mix Lillian moves, you can hear her coming.

That is if she is in her cart, specially-made to support her weak back legs.

"She got hit by a truck and she had laid in a corn field for nine days," said current owner Heidi Crates.

Since then, life has not gotten much easier.

"She does stand on her left leg but she can't walk with it because the right leg trips her," said Crates.

But Lil does not feel sorry for herself.

"She plays, she fetches, she'll go get stuff for you, she knows exactly what you're talking about," said Crates.

And Lil keeps up on "walks" and with active kids.

"She doesn't realize that she doesn't have back legs," said Crates.

Crates loves Lil. So much so that she wants to find a new home for her to improve her quality of life.

"I think it could be better," said Crates. "But I just can't afford it, there's just no way."

Lil needs physical training and a veterinarian's care.

"I think she could walk again but they're going to have to x-ray her and find out exactly what's wrong with her," said Crates.

And Lil needs a new home.

Ideally, a place with a yard to re-learn how to walk. And a family with big hearts, the financial means and time to help her live her life to the fullest.

Lillian gets along well with other pets and children.

She is house trained but needs special attention.
