If the 2012 Presidential Election were held right now, Republican Newt Gingrich would beat Democratic incumbent President Barack Obama. At least according to a new poll by Rasmussen Reports.

A national telephone survey of 1,000 likely voters conducted this week shows Gingrich with 45% of the vote compared to 43% for President Obama. 6% of those surveyed liked another candidate.

This is a huge turn around for the former House Speaker. Last week in a Rasmussen survey Gingrich trailed the President by 6 points and two weeks ago he trailed by 12 points.

But we will have to wait and see if Gingrich's surge lasts. Fellow GOP candidates Rick Perry and Herman Cain both at one time held leads over President Obama and you see where they are now in head to head match ups.
