Just like the California Gold Rush of the 1800s, the BGSU football team is heading west!
Okay, it's nothing like the gold rush, in fact the school and it's inhabitants aren't going anywhere, but the Falcons are returning to the Mid-American Conference West dvision in 2012.
The Falcons were a member of the West in 2002 and 2003. They went 13-3 in conference play over those two seasons and captured the division championship in 2003. The move reunites BG with their rivals up north, Toledo.
The reason for the move is to accommodate new MAC member UMass. The change is only for football and all other sports will remain the same.
â??Ever since our announcement of the addition of UMass in football last spring, divisional alignment has been a topic of conversation among our Presidents and Directors of Athletics,â?? said Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, MAC Commissioner. â??We considered a number of different paradigms and ultimately we focused on the core principles of geography, travel and rivalries. We now have a true rotational cycle for football and a scheduling model that will extend for future years.â??
Here is a look at what the MAC will look like in 2012:
MAC East: Akron, Buffalo, Kent State, UMass, Miami Ohio and Temple
MAC West: Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan
Full regular season schedules will be announced in March.
How do you fell about BG moving? Does it matter to you which side they will play on? Will UMass have an impact in their first season?
