TOLEDO, OH - Near the end of Toledo's post-season practice Sunday afternoon came the bad news.
Toledo, which finished with a 7-5 record, including a road victory over MAC Champion Bowling Green, would not be invited to a bowl game. Five Mid-American Conference schools received post-season invitations, but for the first time since 2009, the Rockets would not be among them. Sunday's practice would be the last of the season, and the last ever for UT's seniors.
"It's disappointing. I'm disappointed for our kids," said head coach Matt Campbell, whose UT teams had gone to three bowls in his previous four seasons as either head coach or assistant coach. "It's not the way we wanted to end our football season. I told our kids, it's a tough situation, but tough times don't last, tough people do."
Campbell alluded to late-season losses to Northern Illinois and Akron as hurting his team's prospects for post-season play.
"We had some opportunities at the end of the season to maybe not allow this to happen," said Campbell. "We put our fate in the hands of other people, and when you do that sometimes things like this can happen."
