Football headlines, both local and national, may have dominated the afternoon on Tuesday, but the night belonged to the hard court.
The Toledo Rockets men's basketball team took a tough Norfolk State team down to the wire, only to fall on a lay up with two seconds left, 72-70.
The Rockets trailed by as much as 12 points in the second half, but back to back buckets by Rian Pearson with under a minute remaing tied the game at 70. The Spartans' Brandon Wheeless lost the ball to Rockets forward Matt Smith at the other end but Smith stepped out of bounds allowing Norfolk to inbound underneath their own basket.
It was the second loss in the final seconds in the last 10 days for UT. They fell to Loyola(IL) in a similar fashion on December 10th.
"We've lost two game on a buzzer shot on baseline out of bounds plays...we need to reevaluate our defense obviously in those situations," said Toledo head coach Tod Kowalczyk. The Rockets are now 7-4 on the season, next up is a road contest with Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday at 7:05 pm.
In boys high school basketball, St. John's held court against Findlay, 69-59, Whitmer topped St. Francis 64-45 and Bowling Green, behind 30 points from Vitto Brown, defeated NLL rival springfield 63-49.
