Crashes have littered icy roads and schools are delayed throughout much of northern and central Ohio as winter makes an extended early visit.

While some parts of the state get the season's first taste of snow, the first big helping is being served to northeast Ohio.

More residents of Southern California were urged to leave their homes Sunday despite calming winds that allowed a major aerial attack on wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes and blanketed the region in smoke. Fires burned in Los Angeles County, to the east in Riverside and Orange counties, and to the northwest in Santa Barbara County. More than 800 houses, mobile homes and apartments were destroyed by fires that have burned areas more than 34 square miles since breaking out Thursday.Fire officials ordered 1,400 more residents to evacuate Sunday morning. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said 26,500 people remained under evacuation orders for that fire alone.  

A hurricane watch has been issued for parts of Cuba as Paloma continues barreling toward the Cayman Islands.

Hurricane Omar is a powerful Category 3 storm, but it appears to have skipped through the Caribbean without causing major damage.

The ship is about 120 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas.

Authorities report that Hurricane Ike has killed two people in Louisiana and likely two in Texas.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for areas in Northwest Ohio until 8:00 p.m.  A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Lucas County and Northern Wood County unitl 3:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning in effect until 2:30 p.m. for Defiance and Northern Paulding counties.
